Specifications: 3,185 cc DOHC 32-valve V-8 engine, Bosch K-Jetronic electronic fuel injection, 267 bhp at 7,000 rpm, five-speed manual gearbox in rear transaxle, four-wheel independent suspension with double wishbones, coil springs, and anti-roll bars, and four-wheel hydraulic ventilated disc brakes with ABS. Wheelbase: 2,350 mm (91")
Launched at the 1985 Frankfurt show alongside the 3.2 Mondial 2+2, Ferrari's new 328 continued and built upon the mid-engine V-8 layout of Ferrari's two-seat sports cars established by the Pininfarina-designed 308 GTB and GTS models. Featuring taut bodylines clearly descended from its more curvaceous predecessors, the new 328 was also offered in Berlinetta (GTB) and Targa-type GTS form. Aerodynamic enhancements ushered in by the 328 included integrated bumpers, a new frontal treatment with a wide grille, and a discreet rear spoiler mounted atop the rear roofline. Lowered aerodynamic drag and improved downforce at high speeds were dual benefits of the redesigned body.
Mechanical updates included a larger-displacement 3.2-liter V-8 engine, hence the new Ferrari's '328' designation, indicating 3.2 liters and 8 cylinders. A recent Octane piece summarized the 328 best, stating "There's the same glorious howl from the mid-mounted quad-cam V-8 but, in the 328, it uses an extra 200 cc to provide 30 bhp more than its predecessor along with a lot more torque." That extra power output made the 328 capable of accelerating from rest to 60 mph in under 6.0 seconds en route to a 163-mph top-end charge, representing a significant performance increase over the prior 308. Handling was outstanding, with braking to match. In addition to cutting-edge styling and performance improvements, the 328 also delivered greater interior comfort with reshaped seats and further attention paid to driver-and-machine interaction. Seat upholstery and stitching and updated switchgear were other areas of improvement with the 328.
The 328 was produced for only four years until the fall of 1989, until the 348 ts debuted. Just 6,068 examples of the 328 were produced, with the targa-top GTS the most popular and outselling the GTB by a factor of five to one. While the early 328s followed the time-honored Ferrari odd-number road car format, later examples - after chassis 75000 - were consecutively numbered.
Finished in Rosso (Red) over Black upholstery, this 328 GTS from 1987 is a very fine and highly desirable example of these excellent mid-engine performers. With just an approximate 16,900 miles and two owners from new, it benefits from a freshly completed major service including the all-important timing belts and fuel regulator. A recent inspection also confirms the excellent paint finish and overall condition of this 328. Offered complete with service records and all tools, this top-tier 328 GTSi stands as an outstanding modern classic choice for astute collectors and enthusiasts who like to drive one of the finest V-8 Ferrari supercars!
