From its landmark introduction at Geneva in March 1961, Jaguar's E-Type, alternatively designated 'XKE' in America, redefined the sports-car concept at once with its sensuous projectile-like bodywork, race-bred DOHC engine, stunning performance, and surprising affordability. Rooted in the lineage of the Le Mans-conquering C-Type and D-Type sports racers, three successive generations of 'XK' road cars, and the E1A development car and E2A Le Mans car, Jaguar's XKE carried both an impeccable race-bred pedigree and instant desirability. While its factory-claimed top speed of 150 mph was likely optimistic, well-tuned examples could certainly challenge that lofty mark; nonetheless, the sexy Jaguar was one of, if not the, fastest road car of its era. Reputedly even celebrated by Enzo Ferrari as the most beautiful car he had ever seen, the XKE continues to rank as one of the world's finest automotive designs and it remains one of few automobiles placed on permanent display at New York's Museum of Modern Art.
While designed much like contemporary racing cars and built first and foremost to perform, the XKE proved remarkably adaptable to rapidly changing buyer demands and tightening government regulations during the fast-changing 1960s. During the first few years of production, these changes were mostly evolutionary, making a great original design even better with engine displacement raised to 4.2 litres, the addition of an all-synchromesh gearbox, improved seating, and revised interior trim. Driven mostly by stiff new Federal regulations in the United States, by far Jaguar's most important market, a number of running changes appeared with the unofficially-named "Series 1 1/2" models of late-1967 through 1968. These changes culminated in the late-1968 release of the 'Series II' models, which included all prior updates plus wraparound-type bumpers, uncovered and more effective headlamps, and rocker switches instead of the aircraft-style toggles of the past. Clearly providing a foretaste of the final V-12 'Series III' cars of 1971 through 1974, the 'Series II' models of 1968-1970 rightly enjoy a growing collector following for all their many strengths, combining the updates and improvements of the late first-series cars with enhanced refinement and drivability in today's traffic.
According to its corresponding Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, this stunning 'Series II' XKE Roadster is an original left-hand drive, U.S. specification model that was completed on May 22, 1969 and dispatched to British Leyland Motor Cars in New York on June 4, 1969. It was first titled in Pennsylvania in August 1969 While intervening history remains unknown, it received a professional rotisserie restoration performed by a British car specialist in Connecticut and finished during 2011. Following completion, this XKE was competitively shown to great effect and it garnered a succession of top awards on the East Coast through 2015. Honors included Best of Show with 999 out of 1,000 possible points awarded by professional judges and Best in Class for three consecutive years at the Lime Rock Park Rolex Vintage Festival. In Connecticut JCNA competition, this stellar XKE also won Best in Class and Best of Show for three years running. Other honors received during this period include Best English Sports Car at the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance, a National 3rd Place Award with the North American MG Register, plus miscellaneous Best in Class awards.
Following its May 2015 acquisition by our Consignor, who buys only the best cars and shows them for a year or two before selling, this XKE continued its winning ways on the West Coast with honors during his ownership including First in Class at the Carmel, Hillsborough, and Ironstone Concours d'Elegance.
