Continuing to benefit from an outstanding and recent restoration with limited adult use and proper care in full evidence. Matching numbers, original and iconic Highland Green exterior finish over black interior, original body panels, and Shelby-specific features. A formidable performer with 428 Cobra Jet power and desirable 4-speed transmission.
Specifications: 428 Cobra Jet V-8 engine with Ram Air cold-air induction, single 735 CFM Holley four-barrel carburetor, 335 bhp, Ford Toploader four-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with A-arms and coil springs, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs and staggered shock absorbers, hydraulic front disc/rear drum brakes. Wheelbase: 108"
Taking full advantage of Ford's updated Mustang for 1967 and its revised body shell, which was now capable of accommodating the 390 big-block engine, Shelby American swapped in the more powerful 428 Interceptor V-8 to create the GT500. Packing 360 horsepower, the GT500 was certainly a strong performer, but more was required to strike back at Chrysler's factory-backed Hemi cars and Chevrolet's big-block cars at the dragstrip.
Ford counterattacked with the 428 Cobra Jet, created at the suggestion of Hot Rod Editor Eric Dahlquist, with input from Rhode Island's Tasca Ford. Key CJ components included low-riser 427 heads along with a beefier internals. A 735 CFM Holley carburetor provided induction and a performance camshaft unlocked the CJ's potential. Factory-rated output was 335 horsepower, suspiciously low but pleasing to the insurance companies and manipulating the NHRA's Super Stock factoring system. Any doubts as to the Cobra Jet's true potency were quickly silenced at the 1968 Winternationals, where Ford's six-car Cobra Jet assault culminated in an all-CJ SS/E final round with Al Joniec taking the class win and beating Chrysler's Dave Wren for Super Stock Eliminator.
Recognizing a good thing, Shelby unleashed the Cobra Jet-powered GT500 KR "King of the Road" version of the Mustang during 1968, with the heavier and better-equipped cars upholding the performance ante with the CJ's 440 foot-pounds of tire-melting torque available from just 3,400 rpm. As Shelby's top Mustang-based road model, the sophisticated, Grand Touring-style KR was highly equipped with larger brakes (front disc/rear drum), under-hood suspension bracing, and staggered rear shocks to prevent axle wind-up and wheel hop during hard launches. The new Shelby's provocative "King of the Road" moniker was in fact a cheeky jab at archrival Chevrolet, which was planning to launch a special Corvette with the same name. Since Shelby American had outgrown its facilities at Los Angeles Airport by 1967, the company was split into three entities, with road-car production placed under Shelby Automotive, Inc. in Livonia, Michigan, with assembly subcontracted to A.O. Smith in nearby Ionia. Of the 1,571 GT500 KRs built in all for 1968, 1,053 were sleek Fastbacks, including this truly outstanding example.
This GT500 KR was purchased by the Consignor, a California resident, in 1988. After only a few years of adult enjoyment, it was placed into dry storage until 2009 when a San Diego-area professional was commissioned to perform a "no rush" restoration which he completed to great effect over the next five years. While the KR was in good condition to begin with, everything that needed attention was either retained and restored, or replaced as necessary. Mileage at the time the restoration began was 51,033 miles and now as offered, the figure stands at less than 52,000 miles. In addition to the 428 Cobra Jet engine, Toploader 4-speed manual transmission, and 3.50:1 Traction-Lok rear axle combination, the KR was ordered new with optional features and amenities including the GT Equipment Group, Visibility Group, Sport Deck rear seat, power steering, power front disc brakes, Tilt-Away Steering, AM radio, Interior Décor Group, and shoulder harnesses. According to Deluxe Marti Report, this GT500 KR was produced on June 4, 1968, one day behind schedule. Very well preserved since restoration, the Shelby looks great in its factory-original Highland Green (Code 3067A) paint finish, the same as that of Steve McQueen's Mustang of Bullitt movie fame, over the black interior. This matching numbers GT500 KR also retains all Ford sheet metal and difficult-to-find Shelby parts. Top-notch throughout and a proper, reliable GT500 KR with only limited enjoyment since the restoration was completed, this four-speed 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Fastback is a guaranteed collectible and a truly fitting example of the Shelby legend.
