An outstanding example of the iconic short-wheelbase Porsche 911S from this race-bred model’s landmark first model year. Equipped with electric sunroof and Becker ‘Europa’ AM/FM radio. Great early provenance, having been purchased new by Wilhelm Sebastian, the 1931 Mille Miglia-winning co-driver to Rudolf Caracciola and later Auto Union “Silver Arrow” Grand Prix driver.

Debuted at the September 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show, Porsche’s revolutionary six-cylinder “901” was soon redesignated “911.” It quickly took the racing world by storm, especially in the skilled hands of fast-rising British driver “Quick” Vic Elford, who was the driving force of its early success. The high-performance “S” or “Super” version of the 911 debuted in 1966 for the 1967 model year and quickly begat lightweight racing variants that dominated their respective classes. Main “S” upgrades included a compression boost to 9.8:1, forged pistons with raised crowns, stronger connecting-rods, high-performance camshafts with increased overlap, enlarged valves, Weber IDS carburetors, and revised exhaust ducting, plus ventilated disc brakes, chassis revisions, and now-iconic five-spoke Fuchs alloy wheels. From launch, the 911 S has been the hands-down favorite of driving enthusiasts around the world, with the early short-wheelbase cars providing exceptional “giant-killing” performance and unmatched driver-and-machine interaction. Top-speed performance approached and sometimes exceeded 140 miles per hour.
When new, Porsche advertising copy provocatively described the 911S as “…no car for the novice.” However, Car and Driver magazine’s road test report of the 911S found it quite easy to live with and enjoy, dispelling the reputedly notorious “peakiness” and oversteering tendencies normally ascribed to the car since its debut. During their time with the 911S, Car and Driver testers clocked a blistering 6.5-second sprint from rest to 60 mph, en route to a strong 15.2-second trip over the quarter-mile. Interestingly, the Car and Driver report claimed that this performance was achieved with a test car that was neither tuned nor dealer-prepared prior to the test. Road and Track magazine’s April 1967 coverage of the 911S stated it “…maintains all the great qualities of the 911 and adds to them in several areas.” However, the magazine’s road-test editors came nowhere near the performance figures cited by Car and Driver, instead clocking an 8.1-second time for the 0-60 dash against Porsche’s quoted 7.5-second time. However, once spark-plug fouling had been overcome, acceleration quickened. Nonetheless, period magazine road-test reports almost universally praised the 911S, its performance, and captivating dynamics. Some 20 years on, retrospective coverage of the first-year 911S by Road & Track celebrated its singular experience and massive impact on the sports-car universe. “Although the 911 was still relatively new at the time of R&T’s road test, its virtues were already well known.” In addition to its solid performance credentials, Road & Track also noted the exceptional fit, finish, and overall quality of the 911 in general and the 911S in particular.
Numbered 306058S, this early-production 1967 Porsche 911S was completed on September 29, 1966 and it is one of the 1,818 Porsche 911 coupes built for the 1967 model year. Factory-finished in Irish Green complemented by Brown Leatherette seats with Pepita (houndstooth) cloth inserts, 306058S was originally equipped with options including a radio antenna, loudspeaker, noise suppression for the radio, and a set of Dunlop radial tires. The car was ordered new from Porsche dealer Islinger of Mannheim, Germany, which remains in operation and continues to specialize in Porsches today. The 911S was sold on October 3, 1966 to none other than Wilhelm Sebastian, who co-drove a Mercedes-Benz SSKL with Rudolf Caracciola to victory in the 1931 Mille Miglia – a historic win as the first for non-Italian drivers at this legendary event. Caracciola and Sebastian also set a new average speed record in the process. Subsequently, Sebastian was a driver and technical racing manager with the famed Auto Union “Silver Arrow” Grand Prix team and then served as a mechanic for legendary driver Tazio Nuvolari. Handwritten entries on the Kardex for 306058S show the 911S was serviced at Islinger until November 1967.
Eventually, 306058S made its way to the United States and sunny California, where it is believed to have remained with one owner for about 25 years until it was acquired by an Oklahoma-based Porsche collector and enthusiast. Restoration and mechanical work followed, with the car continuing to be very attractive in presentation throughout today. As offered, features and highlights include a Becker ‘Europa’ AM/FM radio converted to digital operation plus a hidden .mp3 input, and Yokohama radial tires on a full set of five Fuchs 5-spoke alloy wheels. An electric sunroof provides an additional dimension during spirited drives.
