A true sporting icon with impeccable styling; a “must have” collectible
Reporting on the introduction of Jaguar’s brilliant new E-Type at the closely watched Geneva Salon in March 1961, Autosport magazine’s correspondent there announced “The E-Type Jaguar has made its electrifying appearance, and at one stride Britain takes the lead in the Grand Touring market of Europe.” That was no overstatement. From launch, the E-Type, alternatively known in North America as the “XKE,” was almost universally praised for its race-bred performance credentials and sensuous projectile-like bodylines that continue to stop all who experience it first-hand in their tracks. Renowned as one of only a few automobiles ever to be permanently displayed at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the XKE was reportedly once declared the most beautiful car in the world by none other than Enzo Ferrari.
Based upon a competition-style steel monocoque body shell with the powertrain and front suspension mounted upon a subframe underneath a tilting bonnet, the new XKE’s DNA was clearly rooted in Jaguar’s Le Mans-dominating D-Type sports racers that took overall victories there from 1955 through 1957. The XKE’s advanced and effective independent rear suspension was designed by Jaguar engineer Bob Knight and proven on the E1A development “mule,” also known as ‘XKE-101’ and the promising E2A sports-racer campaigned by America’s Team Cunningham team at Le Mans in 1960. A highly functional and attractively sporting interior and the well-developed, 3.8-liter DOHC ‘XK’ engine inherited directly from the outgoing XK150S made the XKE an ideal two-place Grand Touring car. Delivering outstanding performance to match its appearance, the XKE immediately gained fame as one of the world’s first series-production sports cars to closely approach, if not finally break, the magical 150-mph speed barrier.
XKE production began with cars bound for Jaguar’s all-important export markets in March 1961, followed by domestic or “Home Market” production commencing that July. The basic E-Type was quickly refined and improved, keeping pace with buyer demands and the fast-changing regulatory environment throughout its run. Among the changes were modified floor pans for greater driving comfort in 1961; by 1964, the triple SU-carbureted DOHC ‘XK’ engine was enlarged to 4.2 liters’ displacement in concert with a new fully-synchronized gearbox. For true driving enthusiasts, these later ‘Series I’ cars are particularly valuable and coveted today, providing the best of both possible worlds with their heightened drivability, aircraft-type interior with toggle switchgear, minimalistic bumpers, and pure bodylines with sleekly covered headlamps.
This original left-hand drive, U.S.-delivery Jaguar XKE Roadster was factory-finished in Cream with a black interior and black convertible top and completed on July 11, 1966. It was dispatched on August 11, 1966 Jaguar Cars, New York and John M. Flynn III is recorded as the first owner. It was restored more recently and following acquisition by the current owner, the XKE was professionally elevated to the next level, both cosmetically and mechanically, with all systems reviewed. Retaining matching numbers and clearly benefiting from proper care and climate-controlled storage, this splendid late ‘Series I’ XKE roadster has covered fewer than 30,000 miles, which are believed original, and it includes a matching white hard top, an excellent black soft top, and Blaupunkt AM/FM radio. Documents include the corresponding Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate confirming original data and a DVD documenting some of the work performed. A true sporting icon, this late ‘Series I’ roadster is quite likely the most desirable evolution of the XKE and it stands ready to deliver an outstanding experience on every level. As such, it will provide the perfect foundation to any collection of postwar sporting legends.
